Biography

Joseph Mosse' is a second-year student in the dual M. A. Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and M. S. in Information and Library Science. He was born in the United States, but grew up in Ukraine, mostly in Odessa. He received his B.A. in Social Studies Education, with concentrations in Historical Perspectives and Government and Citizenship from Taylor University in Indiana and taught High School Social Studies for four years. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Joseph moved from teaching to humanitarian aid work in Europe and the United States. At UIUC, he cataloged Ukrainian language materials at the university library and supports REEEC programing and initiatives, including the REEEC library, and Ukrainian Studies Committee. He hopes to continue to advance Ukrainian studies and partner with Ukrainian colleagues and partners to help support education in Ukraine. As an educator, he is particularly interested in community development, trauma-informed support for students, teachers and administrators, non-traditional, student-centered educational environments, and the application of all these topics to a Ukrainian context. Joseph has a broad interest in Ukrainian history, literature and culture, with focuses on intercultural exchanges, borderland studies, literacy and education, publishing and bibliography.
