This past Thursday (October 29) I attended the Anthropology Colloquium: Documenting Social Disrupture at Europe's Edge talk by Donna Buchanan. It was an interesting presentation about the documentary: The Good Postman, the presentation focused heavily on the role of sound in crafting the narrative of the documentary. Buchanan argued that sound is deployed sparsely and strategically in the film, used to highlight specific moments and cement the film's themes. I found the analysis to be quite compelling and I learned quite a bit both about the politics of Bulgaria, but also the craft of building documentaries.
