Congratulations to Tamara Pavlović (PhD Student, Anthropology) for receiving the Yaro Skalnik Prize for Best Graduate Student Essay in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies for her paper “Contested Futures: Serbia as a Place of Extracting Value.” Her prize includes an official certificate and an award of $250. Tamara was presented this award at the 2023 REEEC Spring Reception on Thursday, May 4.

The committee praised Pavlović's work for both its importance and its ethnographic insight, lauding her choice to explore “how the government's ideas about the future collide with those of the people who protest various extractive practices in Serbia” profoundly informative and clarifying. One member was moved by “the political and ethical desire for accountability” that flowed through her portrait of popular protest. Another praised the essay’s clear organization and engaging narrative.
